AIMS Tanzania alumnus shines at the international Environmentrics society conference in United arab Emirates
Mr. Laique Merlin, a tutor and a pioneer alumnus at AIMS Tanzania presented a paper at the annual International Environmentrics Society Conference held at the University in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates from 21 to 25 November 2015. The conference was titled: “Quantitative methods for environmental economics, sustainability and indicators.” It was sponsored by the World Bank through the International Statistics Institute who selected Laique’s paper.
Laique’s paper titled: “Extreme Value Modelling with Application to Environmental Control,” is based on the project he undertook as a student at AIMS Tanzania. He was supervised by Prof. Abdel H. El- Shaarawi of the American University in Cairo who is a founder member of the International Environmetrics Society. This is an association of the International Statistical Institute which holds annual conferences to promote multidisciplinary collaboration and communication on environmental matters as they affect development. According to Laique, his paper generated considerable interest from the participants. He also took time to explain the AIMS model to all those he interacted with.
Laique hopes to pursue a PhD in Extreme Value Modelling which has application in various fields and to publish a paper with the official International Statistical Institute Journal this year.
